MADE IN MIKI

Miki City in Hyogo Prefecture is one of Japan’s oldest centers of metalworking, where the traditions of ironmaking and blacksmithing have been passed down through the ages. Its origins date back to the 5th century during the Kofun period, when immigrant blacksmiths known as Karakaji arrived from the Korean Peninsula and introduced ironworking techniques to the region.

During the Sengoku period, the production of carpentry tools flourished, leading to the rapid development of Miki’s metalworking industry. Today, the city is widely known both in Japan and abroad as the home of the traditional craft Banshu Miki Forged Blades (Banshu Miki Uchihamono).

Hyogo Prefecture, home to this historic center of metalworking, has the Nojigiku—the wild chrysanthemum—as its official prefectural flower. Growing resiliently in harsh natural environments and blooming with a gentle fragrance, the flower reflects the spirit of the artisans who devote themselves to working with iron.

Each kitchen knife is individually forged by certified craftsmen who carry on the traditions of Banshu Miki forged blades. More than a simple tool, the knife gradually becomes familiar in the hand with use, remaining by its owner’s side for years to come—an irreplaceable, one-of-a-kind blade.

A Symbolic Flower

The Nojigiku

The Nojigiku, with its white petals and modest appearance, possesses a quiet elegance. Despite its delicate impression, it is a flower with remarkable inner strength, able to bloom even in harsh environments such as salty sea winds and poor soil.

Its dignified beauty is reflected in its symbolic meaning of “nobility.” The flower was also beloved throughout his life by the renowned botanist Dr. Tomitaro Makino, who gave it its name. Even today, it continues to be cherished as a symbol of Hyogo, coloring the prefecture’s autumn landscapes.

A Cherry Wood Handle — Warm and Rich in Tone

The handle is made from cherry wood (sakura), a material celebrated for its strength and often used in fine furniture. Its smooth texture fits naturally and comfortably in the hand, making it pleasant to use even during long cooking sessions.

Another appeal is the way the natural wood develops a deeper color and character with continued use, allowing you to enjoy its evolving luster and texture over time.
